Gary Robinson Biography

grGary Robinson launched his own company in 2013 following 23 successful years working in the radio industry in nearly every role from tea-boy to managing director at five major radio stations across the UK.

After 10 years at Radio Tay in Dundee, Gary was sent north to Moray Firth Radio in Inverness as Managing Director. The brief was to take this award-winning radio station and improve the commercial operation without losing the essence that made the radio station unique.

While at Moray Firth Radio Gary served on the board of the Highland Food and Drink Festival and responsible for one of the largest outdoor music events seen in the Highlands (prior to Rockness). ‘Birthday at the Bught’ was a three-day celebration for MFR’s 25th birthday celebrations.

In 2003 Scottish Radio Holdings bought Vibe FM in England. Gary’s role was to recruit a full team and oversee the relocation of the station from Ipswich to Bury St Edmunds – so it was time to move down south.

During his three years at Vibe he led his team to develop a new brand image, changed the music policy and ensured that this regional radio station became more integrated into the community and relocated the entire business. SRH was acquired by publishing company EMAP in 2005 and I was delighted to be instrumental in the transition from Vibe to Kiss 105.

One of his proudest achievements while at Vibe FM was working closely with Newmarket racecourse to develop and promote their series of music concerts ‘Newmarket Nights’ that featured artists as diverse as Jools Holland, Blondie and Will Young.

Following a successful rebrand at Vibe FM, Gary was asked by EMAP to move to Northern Ireland to re-structure Downtown Radio and Cool FM. Following a challenging but highly enjoyable period in Belfast another change was on the horizon – this time, back across the water to Birmingham due to the purchase of EMAP by German media company, Bauer in April 2007.

Gary was promoted to the post of Managing Director for national rock music station Kerrang! Radio.

He then moved back to Tayside in September 2009 to take up the reins as MD at his beloved Radio Tay achieving record revenue and listening figures.

He left Tay in May 2013 and was delighted to have led a fantastic team of professionals who were instrumental in delivering fantastic results on and off-air over four consecutive years.

Gary is currently Chair of the Dundee charity Help for Kids and in 2013 achieved Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Coaching Practitioner accreditation.

He was also privileged to be Chairman of Cash for Kids for Tayside and Fife and also served on the CFK national board for Scotland, was a trustee of Leisure and Culture Dundee and a previous board member of the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce.

Now, with over twenty years of experience Gary specialises in radio promotions, the professional hosting of conferences, launches, award ceremonies and exclusive private celebrations.

He also works with a select number of clients as a business coach, mentor and trainer in communication. Gary is a visiting lecturer at the University of Abertay specialising in marketing, sales management and communication.
